Abstract:

The concept of self is the general image that a person has of himself. This study was designed in order to evaluate the reliability and validity of Persian version of Self-concept clarity (SCC). The present study is a descriptive-correlation study. Participants were 577 students were selected via convenient sampling method. After forward and backward translations of the Self-concept clarity scale, the original version was compared with the Persian version. Similarities and differences were reviewed and corrected. To determine the validity of methods, convergent and divergent validity was calculated. Data were analyzed using factor analysis and Pearson’ s correlation method. The findings of factor analysis indicated that this scale is uni-factor in the Iranian sample. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the factor structure resulted from exploratory factor analysis which was not different from the proposed factors in original questionnaire. Test-retest reliability was 0. 85 and internal consistency of the scale was 0. 83 by using Cronbach's alpha, Correlation between the two half-tests was 0. 60. Also, the correlation with Rogers self-concept scale was-0. 62and correlation with physiological symptoms sub-scale was-0. 13. The results show that the Persian version of the self-concept clarity scale is a reliable and valid scale.

Abstract:

Background: The role of hormones in the female body is well known in reproductive age. Several studies have been conducted regarding hormonal fluctuations and their association with obsessive-compulsive disorder, but the role of psychological issues relevant to it has been ignored and only hormonal fluctuation and its impact were the target. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Self-concept clarity (SCC) and obsessive-compulsive tendencies (Obsessive-Compulsive Concerns about Cleanliness (OCC) and Obsessive-Compulsive concerns about Harm and Injury (OCHI)). Another objective was to identify the difference between SCC, OCC, and OCHI in healthy and unhealthy females. Methods: A sample of (N=210) females, an equal number of healthy and unhealthy females, from different hospitals and the general population, with a mean age of 21 years, was selected by using convenience sampling technique as a type of non-probability sampling. Study participants were selected from the same city. Results: Comparison of healthy and unhealthy females revealed high levels of SCC and obsessive-compulsive tendencies among unhealthy females and also a significant positive correlation was found between these constructs. Conclusion: The females with irregular hormonal fluctuations develop obsessive-compulsive tendencies and these people are most sensitive to unimportant affairs, even sensitive to themselves that might create clarity in their self-concept.

Abstract:

Background: Eating and body image disorders are 2 of the most debilitating clinical problems among female adolescents and young females. One of the strongest factors contributing to body dissatisfaction and eating pathology is social comparison. Objectives: The current study aimed at determining the relationship between perfectionism, self-concept clarity, and self-esteem and the share of prediction of each in social comparison. Methods: The current cross sectional study included all female high school students in Tehran in the 2014 - 2015 academic year. Of these, 477 females were selected by multistage cluster sampling. Results: The results of the correlation matrix was indicative of a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and self-concept clarity with social comparison (P<0.000). There was a significant positive relationship between perfectionism and social comparison (P<0.000). The results of stepwise regression revealed that self-concept clarity predicted 17% of social comparison variance. By including the variables of perfectionism and self-esteem, the coefficients of determination increased significantly up to 24% and 26%, respectively. Self-esteem and self-concept clarity were significant negative predictors (P<0.000), while perfectionism was a significant positive predictor (P<0.000) of social comparison. Beta coefficients indicated that among the predictive variables, self-concept clarity, and self-esteem were able to predict social comparison more than perfectionism (b=-0.28, b=0.27, and b=-0.18, respectively). Conclusions: Targeting individual differences that make people vulnerable to social comparison not only contributes to understanding the development of eating problems and body image, but also has implications for prevention and treatment.
